How to Install Minecraft Mods

Follow these step-by-step guides to install mods on your Minecraft client or server. Choose your mod loader below.

Installing with Forge

  1. 1

    Download Forge Installer

Visit the official Forge website and download the installer for your Minecraft version. Always use the recommended build for stability.

  2. 2

    Run the Installer

Double-click the downloaded .jar file and select 'Install Client'. Make sure your Minecraft directory is correct, then click OK.

  3. 3

    Launch Minecraft with Forge

Open the Minecraft Launcher, select the Forge profile from the dropdown, and launch the game once to generate the mods folder.

  4. 4

    Add Mods

Download mod .jar files and place them in the 'mods' folder inside your .minecraft directory. Launch the game to load them.

Installing with Fabric

  1. 1

    Download Fabric Installer

Visit the official Fabric website and download the universal installer. Fabric is lightweight and updates quickly for new Minecraft versions.

  2. 2

    Run the Installer

Run the installer, select your Minecraft version, and click Install. Fabric Loader will be added to your launcher profiles.

  3. 3

    Install Fabric API

Most Fabric mods require the Fabric API. Download it and place it in your mods folder alongside your other mods.

  4. 4

    Add Mods

Download Fabric-compatible mod .jar files and place them in the 'mods' folder. Launch with the Fabric profile to play.

Server-Side Installation

  1. 1

    Install the Mod Loader

Download and run the server-side installer for your chosen mod loader (Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, or Quilt) in your server directory.

  2. 2

    Configure the Server

Accept the EULA, configure server.properties, and allocate sufficient RAM. Modded servers typically need 4-8 GB or more.

  3. 3

    Add Server-Side Mods

Place mod .jar files in the server's mods folder. Ensure all mods are compatible with your Minecraft version and loader.

  4. 4

    Match Client Mods

Players connecting to the server need matching client-side mods. Distribute a modpack or mod list to your players.

Tips for Modded Minecraft

Always back up your worlds before adding or updating mods.
Check that all mods are compatible with the same Minecraft version.
Allocate more RAM to Minecraft when running modpacks (4-8 GB recommended).
Read mod descriptions carefully for required dependencies.
Use a mod manager like CurseForge, Modrinth, or MultiMC for easier management.
If Minecraft crashes, check the crash log in the logs folder for the problematic mod.
